HB 1847 Summary

• Increases the age requirement for child passenger restraint systems from under 6 years to under 8 years of age in Oklahoma motor vehicles.

• Children under 4 years must use a rear-facing child passenger restraint system until age 2 or until reaching weight/height limits of the seat, whichever occurs first.

• Children ages 4-7 who are 4 feet 9 inches or shorter must use a child passenger restraint system or booster seat; children 8 years old or taller than 4 feet 9 inches may use a seat belt.

• Violations are punishable by a $50 fine and court costs, with the fine suspended and court costs limited to $15 for first-time offenders who purchase a child restraint system; no points assessed to driving records.

• Act became effective November 1, 2015.
