SB 234 Summary

• Full-time certified peace officers may carry agency-approved weapons anywhere in Oklahoma while on or off duty, with specific identification and concealment requirements when in plainclothes.

• Reserve peace officers who complete at least 120 hours of accredited instruction and receive written authorization from their agency director may carry approved weapons while off duty under the same identification and concealment requirements.

• Off-duty officers carrying handguns not authorized by their agency must have a valid handgun license under the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act and are not representing their employing agency.

• Peace officers and reserve officers may apply to CLEET for handgun licenses with a $25.00 fee, official employment verification letter, and two passport-size photographs; CLEET will waive standard license requirements except fingerprints and background checks if not previously conducted.

• Retired federal, state, county, and municipal peace officers may carry concealed pistols statewide after receiving a CLEET identification card, subject to criminal history searches every four years and specified disqualifying conditions.
