SB 260 Summary

• Department of Public Safety must require persons convicted of certain driving violations in Oklahoma or another state to maintain motor vehicle insurance on file with the Department for one year from the conviction date (or from reinstatement if driving privileges were suspended or revoked).

• Insurance companies must immediately notify the Department by regular or electronic mail whenever a required policy is terminated, with exceptions for vehicle/driver changes, policy renewals, or grace periods.

• Department must provide 30-day notice by registered or certified mail before suspending or revoking vehicle registration and driving privileges for lack of financial security; owner has 10 days to provide proof of insurance or request a hearing.

• Reinstatement requires filing proof of insurance and paying a $100.00 reinstatement fee (or $300.00 if revoked within one year of a prior revocation under this act).

• Vehicle registration cannot be reregistered in the owner's name, spouse's, parent's, child's, or any household member's name until the owner complies with reinstatement requirements; making false certifications regarding financial security is a misdemeanor.
