SB 302 Summary

• Amends Oklahoma Charter Schools Act to add two new provisions allowing federally recognized Indian tribes to sponsor charter schools

• Allows a federally recognized Indian tribe operating a high school under Bureau of Indian Affairs authority as of November 1, 2010, to sponsor a charter school for native language immersion instruction located within the tribe's former reservation or treaty area boundaries

• Allows a federally recognized Indian tribe to sponsor a charter school located within the tribe's former reservation or treaty area boundaries on property held in trust by the Bureau of Indian Affairs for the tribe's benefit

• Clarifies that "charter school" definition includes public schools established by contract with a federally recognized Indian tribe

• Becomes effective November 1, 2015
