SB 89 Summary

• Allows handguns, rifles, and shotguns to be carried in locked, unattended vehicles on school property parking areas when transported for hunting, fishing, or other lawful purposes.

• Permits licensed handgun carriers to carry weapons onto private school property and school buses if the private school's governing entity adopts a policy authorizing such possession.

• Expands exceptions allowing firearms on school property for hunting/fishing education courses, firearms training, recognized sports competitions, and military/veterans ceremonies when approved by school administration.

• Clarifies that unloaded rifles or shotguns may be carried in motor vehicles onto school parking areas and must be stored out of view in locked vehicles when unattended.

• Effective date: November 1, 2015.
