Volunteer firefighters who are age 45 or older when they first begin volunteer service for a municipality or county are ineligible for membership in the Oklahoma Firefighters Pension and Retirement System

Excluded volunteers cannot receive any benefits or service credit from the System for their volunteer firefighting services

Fire Chiefs (or other designated authority) make final determinations on volunteer applicants over age 45 based on local rules, regulations, ordinances, and standard operating procedures

Existing age restrictions remain for paid firefighters: no employment for those over 45 unless they can retire by age 65 (or age 67 for those starting after November 1, 2013)
