Political subdivisions (counties, school districts, municipalities) may hold elections to fill offices only on five specific dates: second Tuesday of February, first Tuesday of April, statewide election dates in even years, and second Tuesday of September and November in odd years

Elections held on the same date as state or federal elections require resolutions to be filed with county election boards at least 75 days prior, with candidate filing periods beginning within 10 days after the resolution deadline

Fire protection district board candidates must file from 8 a.m. on the first Monday after Independence Day until 5 p.m. the following Wednesday, with no filing fee required

Municipal elections scheduled alongside state or federal elections may align their candidate filing periods with the state/federal filing period dates

School district special elections must be scheduled on dates established in Section 3-101, with a three-day filing period beginning no more than 20 days after the resolution is submitted to the county election board
