SB 519 Summary

• Amends the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Retirement System to expand eligibility for disability benefits to members who retire due to service-connected disability and were unable to complete the mandatory 20-year retirement requirement.

• Modifies subsection C and D to include members who retired due to service-connected disability as eligible for benefits calculated using either top base pay for specified positions or final average salary multiplied by 2.5% times years of credited service.

• Requires disability benefit applicants to file completed applications with the System before their termination date and provide required additional information within 6 months, or forfeit eligibility for disability benefits.

• Establishes that members determined to be partially disabled at preemployment physical exams will have their disability benefits reduced by the assigned disability percentage unless the Board determines the initial disability is unrelated to the current disability claim.

• Provides supplemental benefits of $400 per month for each surviving child under age 18 (or 22 if full-time student) of members who receive catastrophic line-of-duty disability benefits.
