Senate Bill 573 Summary

• Prohibits any municipality or political subdivision in Oklahoma from enacting or adopting sanctuary policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities or restrict compliance with Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainers and requests.

• Makes municipalities and political subdivisions ineligible for state grants and funding if they adopt sanctuary policies, with eligibility restored only after the Attorney General certifies the policy is repealed or no longer in effect.

• Requires the Attorney General to issue opinions on whether government entities have sanctuary policies in violation of the act upon request from legislators or prior to disbursement of state funds.

• Mandates that municipal governing bodies and sheriffs provide each law enforcement officer a printed copy of the law and written notice of their duty to cooperate with state and federal immigration enforcement authorities.

• Prohibits state agencies from adopting sanctuary policies and makes records from administrative investigations under the act subject to public disclosure under the Oklahoma Open Records Act; effective November 1, 2017.
