Court clerks may issue service of protective order documents to sheriffs by facsimile or other electronic transmission for service in another county.

Emergency ex parte orders receive priority for service and can be served 24 hours per day when defendant's location is known; sheriffs may contact other law enforcement or private investigators if unable to serve.

Courts must authorize victims to file motions to modify or extend protective orders electronically when necessary to protect the victim.

Protective orders issued on or after November 1, 2012 shall be for a fixed period not exceeding 5 years, unless extended, modified, vacated or rescinded; period of incarceration shall not be included in the 5-year calculation.

Courts may allow victims to be accompanied by a victim support person at court proceedings who may provide comfort and support but cannot make legal arguments.
