SB 679 Summary

• Authorizes pharmacists or pharmacy employees to deliver filled prescriptions to facilities where medical care or pharmacy services are received by patients, with the Board of Pharmacy to promulgate rules requiring facilities to maintain delivery records.

• Permits pharmacists to exercise professional judgment in dispensing varying quantities of maintenance medications per fill up to the total dosage units authorized by the prescriber, except for scheduled medications or those requiring controlled substance database reporting, limited to a 90-day supply maximum.

• Allows licensed pharmacists to prescribe and dispense Naloxone (Narcan) without requiring a dispensing protocol, while maintaining supervision requirements for dispensing or sale.

• Adds exemptions for Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services employees and contracted facilities to possess dangerous drugs for purposes of delivering mental health consumer medications to homes or residences.

• Effective date: November 1, 2017.
