School districts must provide at least 30 minutes of daily recess to students in full-day prekindergarten, kindergarten, and grades 1-5.

At least 30 minutes of daily recess is strongly recommended for students in grades 6-8, with timing established by each district board of education.

Daily recess may be broken into multiple segments throughout the school day and must occur outside the school building unless weather or other conditions require indoor recess.

Daily recess requirements are in addition to existing weekly 60-minute physical education requirements and must comply with individualized education programs (IEPs) or Section 504 plans for students with disabilities.

Virtual charter schools are exempt from the daily recess requirements.
