HB 1595 Summary

• Increases assault penalties from 30 days to 90 days imprisonment and maintains $500 fine maximum.

• Increases assault and battery penalties from 90 days to 6 months imprisonment and maintains $1,000 fine maximum.

• Expands domestic abuse sentencing including felony charges for strangulation (1-3 years), with 3-10 years for repeat offenders, and up to life imprisonment for shootings with deadly weapons.

• Requires defendants convicted of domestic abuse to complete court-ordered batterers' intervention programs for minimum 52 weeks with mandatory attendance and evaluation.

• Becomes effective November 1, 2025.
