SB 589 Summary

• Amends 70 O.S. 2021, Section 11-103.6 to update statutory language regarding school curriculum requirements for graduation.

• Adds "English 10: Advanced Placement Seminar" as an approved course option to fulfill English unit or set of competencies requirements for students entering eighth grade in 2025-2026 school year and beyond.

• Increases mathematics requirements from 3 to 4 units for students entering eighth grade in 2025-2026 school year, with mandatory completion of Algebra I and either Algebra II or Geometry, plus two additional math courses.

• Introduces "pathway units" (6 units) aligned with student Individual Career and Academic Plans (ICAP) and adds 3 elective units as part of updated 23-unit minimum graduation requirements for students entering eighth grade in 2025-2026 school year.

• Takes effect July 1, 2025, with emergency declaration for immediate implementation.
