Operators of idle gas wells nonproductive for 20+ years must reduce their idle well count by 25% by July 1, 2028, 50% by July 1, 2031, and plug or produce from all remaining wells by July 1, 2035

Idle gas wells nonproductive for less than 20 years must be plugged or returned to production within 10 years of the act's effective date

"Idle gas well" is defined as a gas well with no commercial production (no natural gas sales) for the preceding 10 years and no demonstrated future use

Exceptions may be granted by the Corporation Commission for good cause, including planned use for production, injection, carbon storage, or geothermal energy generation

Plugging deadlines remain unchanged when idle wells are sold, leased, or transferred to new operators
