Public school districts and public charter schools must annually provide age-appropriate firearm safety instruction to students beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, continuing through twelfth grade

State Department of Education and Department of Wildlife Conservation must jointly determine the earliest appropriate grade for instruction, based on data including earliest ages of firearm injury incidents and children's access to unsecured firearms

Required curriculum must cover steps to take when finding an unsecured firearm (avoid touching, immediately notify an adult), school safety relating to firearms, and proper handling and safe storage of firearms

Preferred instruction methods include videos from the Department of Wildlife Conservation, online resources, or off-campus firearm safety courses that may include live-fire exercises with parental written consent

Effective date is July 1, 2026, with an emergency clause allowing immediate effect upon passage and approval
