Licensed physical therapists, including those operating under direct-to-employer contracts, may evaluate and treat patients without a referral for up to 30 days (excluding workers' compensation claims)

Treatment beyond 30 days requires referral from a physician, surgeon, physician assistant, doctor of dentistry, chiropractic, podiatry, or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse within their respective practice areas

Physical therapists may provide services without physician referral for children receiving services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

Physical therapists may perform screening, educational procedures, and fitness/wellness/prevention services without a referral when not treating an injury or ailment
