District attorneys may charge defendants a fee before providing discovery materials, with the fee reasonably calculated to reimburse costs

Allowable costs for fee calculation include staff time spent reviewing, redacting, compiling, and formatting discovery materials

Physical materials covered by the fee include paper documents, photographs, audio/video recordings, and electronic storage media such as compact discs, flash drives, and hard drives

Overhead costs such as equipment wear and building maintenance may also be factored into the discovery fee
