Health insurance policies and health care service contracts that cover bariatric surgery and nutrition counseling must also cover diagnosis and treatment of obesity as a chronic disease, including intensive behavioral/lifestyle treatment, metabolic and bariatric surgery, and FDA-approved obesity medications

Coverage requirements apply to Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid) recipients through coordinated care organizations, Public Employees' Benefit Board (PEBB) plans, and Oregon Educators Benefit Board (OEBB) plans

Obesity medications must be covered consistent with FDA-approved indications, and coverage restrictions cannot be more restrictive than those applied to other health benefits under the policy

Intensive behavioral and lifestyle treatment may be provided in-office, in community settings, or via telemedicine, and may include CDC-certified or recognized interventions

Effective dates: January 1, 2026 for PEBB and OEBB plans; January 1, 2027 for private insurance policies and Oregon Health Plan medical assistance
