Police departments in first class cities and first class townships may establish programs allowing retired police officers to return to work for up to five years

Retired officers must have no record of unacceptable behavior or disciplinary action and must complete an eight-week training program established by the Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission

Participating officers must irrevocably elect whether to continue or discontinue their retirement pension benefits during program participation

Officers who participate receive credited service based on time worked and compensation received, applied to their municipal retirement benefits

Programs expire six years after the effective date and only apply to officers who retired before the law takes effect; the act becomes effective 60 days after enactment
