National Work Zone Awareness Week originated in Virginia in 1997 and became a national campaign in 2000 through partnerships between state transportation departments, federal agencies, and safety organizations

In 2023, 898 people were killed and 40,170 injured in work zone crashes nationally; the vast majority of fatalities were motorists and passengers

Pennsylvania recorded 1,250 work zone crashes in 2024, resulting in 22 fatalities

The 2026 theme is "Safe actions, save lives" with scheduled events including Work Zone Safety Training Day, Go Orange Day, and a Moment of Silence
