Schools (including public school entities, nonpublic schools, and private schools) must notify parents, guardians, and employees within 24 hours when a weapon possession incident occurs on school property that violates state law or local school policy

Notification may be limited to those associated with the specific school building where the incident occurred, unless the building shares a campus with other schools, in which case all campus buildings must be notified

Incidents at school-sponsored activities or on school transportation require notification to the appropriate population, but notification is not required if the incident is unrelated to the activity or involved students/staff

School employees to whom a student possessing a weapon is assigned must be informed of the student's identity and relevant records, subject to federal FERPA privacy requirements

Notifications to the general school community must not contain personally identifiable student information, and the law does not override law enforcement reporting requirements, emergency procedures, or collective bargaining agreements
