Lodging establishments (hotels, motels, inns, guest houses, hostels) with fossil-fuel-burning heaters, fireplaces, appliances, or attached garages must install approved carbon monoxide alarms within 18 months of the act's effective date

Alarms must be operational, centrally located near the fossil-fuel source, and installed in every unit on the same floor as the fuel-burning equipment or attached garage

Lodging establishment owners are responsible for maintenance, repair, and replacement of carbon monoxide alarms and their batteries

Willful failure to install or maintain required alarms is a summary offense with fines up to $50

College and university student residence halls are excluded from the definition of lodging establishment
