U.S. maternal mortality rate increased from 7.2 deaths per 100,000 live births in 1987 to 18 deaths per 100,000 in 2014, despite medical advances.

Pennsylvania's 2021 pregnancy-associated mortality ratio was 97 deaths per 100,000 live births, with Black women experiencing rates of 186 deaths per 100,000—two times higher than overall rates.

References Act 24 of 2018 (Maternal Mortality Review Act), which established a multidisciplinary Maternal Mortality Review Committee to examine pregnancy-related deaths and develop prevention recommendations.

Pennsylvania Black Maternal Health Caucus was formed in October 2023 to address Black maternal mortality and morbidity trends in the Commonwealth.
