Earned a bachelor's degree in Philosophy and Religion from Wheaton College and a master's degree in Education from Harvard University; coauthored the award-winning publication "That All May Worship"

Married for over 60 years to the late Dick Thornburgh, who served as Pennsylvania Governor (1979-1987), U.S. Attorney General, and UN Under-Secretary-General

Her advocacy work was inspired by her son, who has intellectual and physical disabilities; she has received 11 honorary degrees and multiple awards for disability community involvement
