Veterinarians must offer drug consultations to dog or cat owners in outpatient settings when initially prescribing, dispensing, or furnishing medications, delivered verbally, in writing, or by email

Required consultation information includes drug name and description, dosage and administration details, duration of therapy, common severe adverse effects, storage instructions, and missed dose guidance

Manufacturer client information sheets must be provided to pet owners when available

Veterinarians may delegate consultation duties to registered veterinary technicians or veterinary assistants

Medical records must document whether the client accepted or declined the consultation; effective January 1, 2027
