Foreign-trained dentists may obtain limited licenses in Rhode Island if they graduated from a reputable dental college, work under a supervising dentist, and pass a board-approved examination.

Foreign-trained dental hygienists may similarly obtain limited licenses with graduation from a reputable dental hygiene college, supervision by a licensed dentist, and passage of a board examination.

A "reputable" dental college must offer at least a 4-year program (or 3 years with 2 years of pre-dental training), with each academic year consisting of at least 32 weeks, and be authorized to confer doctoral degrees in dentistry.

A "reputable" dental hygiene college must offer at least a 2-year program with academic years of at least 32 weeks and be authorized to confer at minimum an associate degree.

The Department of Health director or board of examiners may revoke limited registrations at any time and shall promulgate rules to implement these provisions.
