Individuals may voluntarily add themselves to a temporary restricted list (180 days, with removal possible after 30 days) or an indefinite restricted list (removal possible after 90 days), prohibiting them from purchasing or possessing firearms.

Requests for inclusion must be submitted in person to local law enforcement or Rhode Island State Police, or through a healthcare provider with proper verification and medical release forms.

Concealed carry permits are automatically suspended while on a restricted list and reinstated upon removal, unless the permit has expired or the individual becomes otherwise prohibited from possessing firearms.

All records related to an individual's voluntary restriction must be destroyed upon removal from the list and are exempt from public records requests; past inclusion cannot be used in future background checks or permit applications.

Firearm possession while on a restricted list results in a $25 civil fine, and adding someone to a restricted list without their knowledge is a misdemeanor.
