Candidates for coroner must meet basic requirements including U.S. citizenship, one-year county residency, registered voter status, age 21+, high school diploma, and no felony or moral turpitude convictions

Candidates must also meet at least one professional qualification: 3 years death investigation experience, associate degree plus 2 years experience, bachelor's degree plus 1 year experience, 2+ years as certified law enforcement officer, completed forensic science degree/certification, medical doctor, or nursing degree

Removes the option to be enrolled in (rather than have completed) a forensic science program at time of candidacy

First-term coroners must complete basic training through the SC Criminal Justice Academy by the end of the calendar year following election, with all coroners required to complete 16 hours of annual training

Candidates must file sworn affidavits with their county party executive committee or election commission documenting their qualifications before the filing deadline
