Expands the offense of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature to include injuring healthcare workers or emergency response employees while they are performing their official duties or because of their official duties

Healthcare workers and emergency response employees are defined according to Section 44-29-230 of the South Carolina Code

Assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature is a felony punishable by up to 20 years imprisonment

The new provision adds a third category for this charge, alongside existing criteria of causing great bodily injury or using means likely to produce death or great bodily injury

Takes effect upon approval by the Governor
