Patients must be notified of their right to receive itemized bills and may choose their preferred format (electronic or written), though they may waive this right

Healthcare facilities are prohibited from pursuing debt collection against patients unless an itemized bill has been provided or the patient waived the right to receive one

Collection agencies are not liable for billing inaccuracies from healthcare facilities and must cease collection and return accounts if inaccuracies are discovered; licensing authorities may take disciplinary action against facilities that violate these requirements
