James Roland Smith, former South Carolina House Representative, passed away on June 30, 2025, at age 92 in Aiken County

Served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and received the National Defense Service Medal; worked as a Pentecostal minister for 38 years

Represented House District 84 in Aiken County for 20 years (1993-2013), serving as Chairman of the House Ethics Committee and member of the Ways and Means Committee

Held additional public service roles including chairman of the Beech Island Rural Community Water and Sewer District for 10 years and Aiken County Board of Education member for 6 years

Survived by his wife of 72 years, Peggy Cato Smith, three children, five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren
