Dr. Robert Layton McCurdy of Charleston passed away on January 26, 2026, at age ninety, prompting the South Carolina House of Representatives to express profound sorrow and extend sympathy to his family

Dr. McCurdy earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in 1960 and served as chairman of the MUSC Department of Psychiatry, dean of the medical school, and vice president for medical affairs

Professional leadership included serving as president of the American College of Psychiatrists and the Association for Academic Psychiatry, with honors including South Carolina's Order of the Palmetto

Extensive civic involvement included board service for the Charleston Orphan House, Trident United Way, South Carolina Aquarium, South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, and numerous other organizations

He is survived by his wife, Gwen Atkinson McCurdy, and sons Robert Layton "Robby" McCurdy Jr. and David Barclay McCurdy
