Served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War with the Mobile Riverine Force in the Mekong Delta, earning two Bronze Stars and the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat V

Worked as a certified public accountant (CPA), eventually owning his own practice (Clarke and Ballentine LLC, later Ballentine and Hodges LLC) before retiring in 2013

Active member of Taylors First Baptist Church and served on multiple community boards including the Taylors Free Medical Clinic and the Paraclete Foundation

Father of South Carolina State Representative Nathan Ballentine of Chapin; married 56 years to Mitsy Winburn Ballentine
