South Carolina House Resolution celebrates the historic chartering of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. at Wofford College on March 22, 2026, marking the first National Pan-Hellenic Council sorority established on the campus

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. was founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University as the first intercollegiate historically Black sorority and currently has more than 365,000 members in 1,085 chapters across 12 countries

Wofford College, founded in 1854 in Spartanburg, voluntarily desegregated in 1964, and Janice Brewton Means became its first African American woman graduate in 1973

The chapter was chartered through leadership of Tiffany Moore Russell Esq., 20th South Atlantic Regional Director, in partnership with Wofford College and Epsilon Beta Omega Chapter, with seventeen charter members

The resolution wishes the new chapter success in carrying out the sorority's mission to cultivate high scholastic and ethical standards and provide service to all mankind
