Special elections, primaries for special elections, and related matters may only be held on specific dates: fourth Tuesday in January, first Tuesday after first Monday in April, second Tuesday in June (even years, primaries only), fourth Tuesday in August, or first Tuesday after first Monday in November (non-primaries only)

Filing periods for candidates in special elections reduced from eight to seven days for partisan elections and from ten to seven days for nonpartisan elections, with extensions if closing falls on a legal holiday

No special election required to fill an unexpired term if the general election for that office is 100 days or less away, except for U.S. House of Representatives vacancies

State and county party committees may reopen candidate filing if a candidate dies or withdraws when two or fewer candidates remain, but must hold a public hearing within 48 hours and publicly vote to authorize a three-business-day additional filing period

Municipal governing bodies may set by ordinance when newly elected officers' terms begin, between 48 hours after election certification and 80 days after election day
