Public school districts with more than 15,000 students may use armed security personnel or those with arrest authority on school premises if they obtain a proprietary security business license from SLED

School district security officers must be at least 21 years old, work within a full-time security division, complete joint training with local law enforcement, and be recertified every two years

SLED must develop standards and guidelines for private security in schools and will require approximately $132,320 in the first year for 2 additional staff positions to manage increased license applications

Security personnel may supplement but not replace school resource officers, and cannot serve in the advisor and teacher roles authorized for SROs

Sixteen regular school districts and two charter school districts currently meet the 15,000-student threshold to qualify for this program
