Health insurers cannot deny coverage of a nonopioid prescription drug in favor of an opioid when a licensed physician has prescribed the nonopioid for pain treatment

Prior authorization, step therapy, and other utilization controls for nonopioid drugs cannot be more restrictive than requirements for opioid or narcotic drugs

Nonopioid drugs must be placed on formulary tiers with cost-sharing no higher than the lowest cost-sharing required for any opioid or narcotic drug

Applies to health insurance policies delivered, issued, or renewed in South Dakota under chapter 58-17
