South Dakota joins the Athletic Trainer Licensure Compact, allowing licensed athletic trainers from member states to practice across state lines through a "Compact Privilege" without obtaining separate licenses in each state

Athletic trainers seeking compact participation must complete a state and federal fingerprint-based criminal background check at their own expense and hold either active BOC (Board of Certification) certification or a bachelor's degree in athletic training from a CAATE-accredited program

The compact creates the Athletic Trainer Compact Commission, a joint government agency with one commissioner per member state, to administer the agreement, maintain a data system of licensee information, and promulgate rules

Licensees must follow the scope of practice laws of the state where the patient is located and may have their compact privilege revoked by any member state for violations; disciplinary actions result in deactivation of privileges across all member states

Active military members and their spouses are exempt from paying commission fees for compact privileges, and the compact takes effect when seven states have enacted it
