Excavators must notify the one-call notification center at least 48 hours before beginning any excavation, with the period starting at 12:01 a.m. the day after notice is submitted, excluding weekends and state holidays

Operators must mark underground facility locations within 18 inches horizontally using stakes, flags, paint, or other identifiable markings within 48 hours of receiving notice

The board may reduce the 48-hour notice period for emergencies or follow-up inquiries to original locate requests, and may extend it for non-excavation requests

Excavators must maintain a minimum 18-inch horizontal clearance between marked underground facilities and mechanical equipment cutting edges

Excavation within 18 inches of a marked facility requires exposing it first with hand tools or approved noninvasive methods, then protecting and supporting it before using mechanical equipment
