Published more than twenty books as an internationally recognized author; received the 2008 PEN/Beyond Margins Award, 2023 Owen Wister Award, and induction into the Western Writers Hall of Fame in 2023

Received the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation Educator of the Year Award in 2022 for lifelong leadership in education
