Surveillance cameras remain prohibited on federal interstate highways except for SmartWay cameras, intelligent transportation system cameras, and state-operated cameras used for work zone traffic enforcement or terrorism/criminal investigations (excluding traffic violations)

Counties and municipalities may install surveillance cameras on public roads and highways other than federal interstates to aid in terrorism prevention and criminal offense investigations

Local surveillance cameras must be operated only by local law enforcement agencies and cannot be used to enforce traffic violations or issue traffic citations

Cameras installed on state roads require prior approval from the Tennessee Department of Transportation

Takes effect immediately upon becoming law
