Biological specimens for DNA analysis must be collected within 30 days of sentencing, or before release if the incarceration term is less than 30 days

Applies to persons convicted of any felony or applicable misdemeanor who are committed to state custody or confined in county jails or workhouses

Law enforcement agencies may submit biological specimens from deceased offenders previously convicted of qualifying offenses to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, regardless of conviction date

Mandatory submission required when an offender dies while incarcerated if their DNA specimen was not previously collected, regardless of when the qualifying offense conviction occurred

Effective July 1, 2025
