Local education agencies (LEAs) must allow virtual school students to participate in interscholastic athletics at member schools if they meet eligibility requirements established by the athletic organization or association regulating the competition

For schools not affiliated with athletic associations, LEAs must permit virtual school students to participate in athletics if the student is zoned for and otherwise eligible to attend that school

The law guarantees virtual school students the right to try out for athletic teams but does not guarantee they will make the team; coaches retain authority over team selection decisions

Athletic organizations and associations maintain full authority to determine eligibility and establish, modify, and enforce their rules for virtual school students

Passed March 28, 2025 and approved by Governor Bill Lee on April 11, 2025, taking effect immediately upon becoming law
