LEAs and public charter schools must prohibit students from displaying, using, or accessing personal electronic devices (mobile phones, smartphones, tablets) during the school day starting in the 2025-2026 school year

Exceptions allowed for school-provided devices, assistive technology for students with disabilities, devices authorized under IEPs or Section 504 plans, and other uses permitted by local policy

Local boards of education and charter school governing bodies must adopt policies implementing the ban, which may include categorical bans in specific areas like libraries and examination halls and exceptions for emergencies

Policies must establish a process for contacting parents during school emergencies to ensure restricted device access does not prevent emergency notifications

All LEAs and public charter schools must submit their electronic device policies to the Tennessee Department of Education by July 31, 2025
