Health benefit plans issued on or after January 1, 2026 that cover mental health and substance abuse services must provide coverage and reimbursement through the Psychiatric Collaborative Care Model (PCCM)

PCCM is defined as an evidence-based integrated behavioral healthcare model involving a primary care provider and care manager working with a psychiatric consultant who provides regular consultations

Health plans may deny PCCM coverage based on medical necessity grounds

TennCare and CoverKids programs may provide PCCM coverage when determined medically necessary under existing state law (§ 71-5-144)

Mental health and substance abuse services are defined as treatment for conditions listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
