LEAs and public charter schools may create programs allowing students in grades 9-12 to earn 1/2 credit in physical education by completing yardwork projects for older persons and persons with disabilities in their community

Students may participate for no more than one class period per school day, and yardwork hours must equal or exceed the instructional hours required for a traditional 1/2 credit PE course

Schools must obtain written parental consent, ensure students are supervised at all times, and require background investigations for all community service partners who have contact with students

Community service partner organizations must maintain attendance and hour records, and assume all liability for students while they perform yardwork services off school grounds

Participating schools must annually collect surveys from all stakeholders and submit reports to the Department of Education on participation numbers, satisfaction levels, and program outcomes
