Health insurers and HMOs in Tennessee must cover medically necessary treatment for acquired brain injuries (ABI), including cognitive rehabilitation therapy, neurobehavioral therapy, neuropsychological testing, vision therapy, community reintegration services, and post-acute residential treatment

Coverage cannot include lifetime limits or unreasonable annual limits on treatment days or sessions, and inpatient rehabilitation limits must be kept separate from post-acute rehabilitation limits

ABI treatments cannot be subject to higher deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, or out-of-pocket costs than other covered services under the same health plan

Only clinical peer reviewers with specialized ABI experience may conduct preauthorization or utilization review for these services, and the Commissioner of Commerce and Insurance must establish an expedited appeal process for coverage denials

Effective January 1, 2027, applying to insurance contracts entered into, amended, or renewed on or after that date
