Local education agencies (LEAs) must classify school nurses as licensed personnel and compensate them according to the LEA's licensed personnel salary schedule.

School nurses who are LEA employees, hold a registered nurse license, are Nationally Certified School Nurses, and have zero years of experience must receive the same base salary as licensed teachers with a bachelor's degree and zero years of experience.

Salary must be adjusted based on training and experience—nurses with more qualifications receive higher pay, those with less receive lower pay than the base.

Current school nurses cannot have their salaries reduced when new salary schedules are adopted.

Takes effect July 1, 2026, applying to the 2026-2027 school year and thereafter; does not apply to contracted school nurses or those through the Tennessee public school nurse program.
