Local boards of education must require school bus drivers to either submit to an annual physical and mental examination OR annually verify possession of a valid Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration medical certificate

Medical certificates must be issued by examiners listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners, confirming qualification to operate commercial motor vehicles under 49 C.F.R. Part 391

Physical and mental examination results must be recorded on forms prescribed by the local board of education

Local boards may use Tennessee Department of Safety records to verify a driver's federal medical certification compliance
